NZTA Deregistration — What It Means
When you scrap a vehicle in New Zealand, it must be formally deregistered with NZTA (Waka Kotahi). This removes the vehicle from the NZ Motor Vehicle Register and ends your liability for road user charges and registration renewal.
The MR13 Form
The key document is the NZTA MR13 — the Vehicle Disposal/Deregistration form. At ScrapMyCar.NZ, we complete this on site at every collection. You don't need to visit a licensing agent or fill in any paperwork yourself.
What Happens After Deregistration
- Vehicle removed from the NZ Motor Vehicle Register
- Any unused registration refunded by NZTA (if applicable)
- No further RUC liability for the vehicle
- Certificate of deregistration provided
Unused Registration Refund
If your vehicle has current registration, you may be entitled to a refund of unused registration from NZTA. We advise you on this at collection. Refunds are processed by NZTA within 2–4 weeks.
